Order of Franz Joseph was instituted in 1849 for military and civil merit, especially in the field of industry, commerce and diplomacy. In first time order exist in three classes, but later expanded to five. Grand Cross, Commander with Star, Commander, Officer and Knight. The Officer's cross instituted in 1901, and has the lower arm longer then the others.
The ribbon is raspberry red until is awarded for war services ( end of 1914 and August 1916 for Grand Cross). 
The order is worn with the ribbon of Military Cross of Merit (red and white horizontal stripes with red and white edges). The Officer's cross is worn on breast on needle without ribbon.
Type of this order with swords is awarded for bravery in action.
